Review: Flowerheart

Imagine having a massive amount of power within you, power you couldn’t control. Power that seems to have a mind of its own and has caused chaos for years. Now imagine that power hurting one of the people you love and having no idea how to help them.

That’s life for Clara Lucas. Blessed with immensely strong magic but unable to wield it, she unintentionally harms her father. And the only way for her to cure him is for her to harness her power and bless him. But she’s never been able to control it, no matter how hard she’s tried. Now the Council is threatening to bind her magic, causing her pain with any spell or potion she tries to conjure, or to remove her magic completely. That’s when her childhood best friend, Xavier Morwyn steps in and offers to help her garner some control.

But Xavier has secrets of his own and ulterior motives for wanting to help Clara.

Flowerheart is an incredibly endearing tale of magic, trust, and friendship. Catherine Bakewell creates characters that are easy enough to love and root for while also intriguing the reader. While I thoroughly enjoyed reading Flowerheart, I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing. Some of the characters that make an appearance seem superfluous to the overall storyline. At times, it was difficult to follow the timing of the story. While not a huge obstacle, it was a bit disconcerting at times not knowing how much time had passed between events.

If you’re looking for a story with magic, wildness, and mystery, I highly recommend picking up Flowerheart. You won’t regret it!
