Where Worlds Collide: Exploring of Cross-Genre Fiction

“Best of both worlds” is a phrase we hear often, but not so much when it comes to the books we read. It seems that most fall into one category or another. Or there are those that try to span a couple different genres but don’t necessarily do it well. However, I’ve come across a few that absolutely hit the mark (or marks) when it comes to crossing genres.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is a perfect example of blending more than one genre. Set in 1945, Outlander is a beautifully written historical fiction that quickly turns into a fantasy novel as our main character time travels to 1743. Along the way, she finds herself falling in love with a Scottish Highlander and that’s just the beginning of her adventure. The Outlander series is a perfect example of blending three genres (historical fiction, fantasy, and romance) into a whirlwind story that spans a multitude of books.

The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden is yet another example of blending historical fiction and fantasy. Taking place in medieval Russia, this novel is a poetic blend of folklore and fantasy surrounded by the snowy atmosphere of Russia. It makes for the perfect winter read. But be warned, this is just the first of a three book series and you will get hooked!

Lastly, I can’t end this blog post without pointing out one of my all-time favorites, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Unlike the previously mentioned books, The Night Circus blends fantasy and literary fiction in a beautifully written prose that creates a magical atmospheric read. A story of two young magicians forced to play a game by their instructors. Yet the two fall headfirst into love, causing a domino effect that affects everyone’s lives.

When picking your next read, try exploring some of these cross-genre books. And I’d love to hear any that you’ve read, or are looking forward to reading, to add to my own TBR!
