Trope Tuesday: The Magic of Found Family

Blood may be thicker than water, but sometimes, the family you choose is the one that truly saves you.

The Found Family trope is one of my all-time favorites. There’s something deeply emotional about a group of misfits, outcasts, or loners who, through shared experiences, become fiercely loyal to each other. Whether they’re banding together to fight for survival or simply offering each other the love and support they never had, found families create some of the most heartwarming and gut-wrenching moments in fiction.

Some of my favorite books that embrace this trope:

💛 The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune – A heart-melting story about an unlikely caretaker finding a home among magical misfits.

⚔️ Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – A crew of criminals who might steal and kill, but would also burn the world down for each other.

📖 The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers – A cozy, sci-fi adventure where a ragtag spaceship crew becomes a true family.

Why do we love found family stories so much? Maybe it’s because they remind us that love and loyalty aren’t about genetics—they’re about choice. That no matter how broken someone may feel, there are people out there who will take them in, scars and all.
