😱 Freaky Friday: 5 Books That Made Me Sleep With the Lights On

Welcome back to Freaky Friday, where we celebrate the chilling, the twisted, and the absolutely unhinged. If you’re the kind of reader who says you want a cozy weekend read but ends up deep in a book full of murder, monsters, or morally questionable decisions—this one’s for you.

Here are five books that legitimately made me question my sanity—and keep the lights on long after I turned the final page:

🩸 1. House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland

A fever dream of body horror, sinister sisters, and beauty that masks rot. It’s haunting, lyrical, and has a final reveal that left my jaw on the floor. I still don’t trust mirrors.

🦓 2. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Classic gothic meets decaying decadence and fungal horror. The atmosphere clings to your skin like damp velvet. There’s something very wrong with that house—and no, you won’t be able to look away.

šŸ’€ 3. The Honeys by Ryan La Sala

Dreamlike, disturbing, and laced with gender defiance and grief. This book walks the edge between psychological horror and folk horror, and it made me feel like I was floating through a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.

šŸŖ“ 4. The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

Sharp as a hunting blade and just as bloody. This is horror rooted in tradition, guilt, and retribution, and the pacing will have you devouring it in a panic. Bonus: the writing is weird in all the right ways.

🩷 5. Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

Not paranormal. Just pure, vicious, violent human horror. I can’t even summarize the plot without warning you to brace yourself. This is not a book for the faint of heart—but if you want a thriller that leaves you wrecked? This is it.

šŸ’¬ Which of these have you read—and what book left you afraid to open a closet door at night?
