Review: Gilded by Marissa Meyer

A Darker Bite of Fairytales

Marissa Meyer always knows how to serve up a fairytale with a twist, and Gilded is no exception. This isn’t your childhood Rumpelstiltskin—it’s darker, moodier, and decadent, like biting into chocolate that’s just a little too bitter, yet somehow addictive.

The Atmosphere: Rich but Heavy

Meyer crafts a world dripping with gothic beauty. Shadows curl at the edges of every page, and the prose shimmers with eerie enchantment. The writing is lush, layered, and atmospheric—but sometimes the garnish overwhelms the plate. The pacing slows under the weight of all that detail, making this more of a slow feast than a quick binge.

The Characters: Sharp and Satisfying

Where the story shines is in its cast. Our heroine is flawed, clever, and wonderfully easy to root for. The morally gray figures surrounding her bring just enough bite to keep the tale from becoming too sweet. There’s danger, longing, and a thread of romance woven throughout, though it doesn’t quite hit the same addictive rush of Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles or Renegades series.

Final Thoughts

Gilded is a glimmering confection: dark, beautiful, and sometimes a touch overindulgent. It may not be a one-sitting binge, but it’s worth savoring for its mood and atmosphere.

Devour or Nibble?

Verdict: Nibble — gorgeously dark and atmospheric, but too heavy to fully devour in one sitting.
