Chaotic Reader Confessions: Tell Me I’m Not the Only One 📚

There are two types of readers in the world: the perfectly organized ones with color-coded TBR lists and neat little reading schedules… and the rest of us.

You know. The chaotic ones.

The ones with towering TBR piles, five books started at once, and absolutely no shame about adding another title to the list even though we’re already drowning in unread stories.

Since it’s Sunday—and Sundays feel like the perfect time for a little honesty—I thought we could share a few reader confessions here on Literary Gluttony.

Not hot takes. Not controversial opinions.

Just the slightly chaotic, mildly embarrassing, very real habits that come with being a book lover.

Please tell me I’m not the only one.

📖 Confession #1: My TBR Is Completely Unhinged

At this point, my TBR isn’t a list. It’s more like a small, unstable ecosystem.

There are the books I bought because everyone was talking about them.
The books I picked up because the cover was gorgeous.
The books I absolutely had to have during a late-night online shopping spiral.

And then there are the books that have been sitting there so long they’re basically part of the furniture now.

Will I read them all eventually?

Maybe.

Do I keep adding more anyway?

Also yes.

📚 Confession #2: I Start Multiple Books at the Same Time

In theory, I love the idea of reading one book at a time and giving it my full attention.

In reality?

I currently have several books “in progress,” each one waiting patiently for the exact mood that made me start it in the first place.

One for when I want fantasy.
One for when I want romance.
One for when I want something darker.
One that I swear I’m going to finish soon.

It’s less of a reading schedule and more of a rotating literary buffet.

📕 Confession #3: I Sometimes Forget Character Names

Look, I’m fully invested in the story.

I know the vibes.
I know the emotional stakes.
I know exactly who’s betraying who.

But occasionally my brain will just… refuse to hold onto a character’s name.

So I end up thinking of them as things like:

  • “The broody one”
  • “The suspicious best friend”
  • “That guy who definitely shouldn’t be trusted”

And honestly? It works.

📗 Confession #4: I Absolutely Judge Books by Their Covers

I know we’re not supposed to.

But I do.

A gorgeous cover will catch my attention every single time. Moody artwork, dark florals, mysterious typography—suddenly I’m reading the synopsis before I even realize what happened.

Does this sometimes lead to disappointment?

Sure.

But it has also led me to some incredible books I might never have picked up otherwise. So honestly, I’m going to keep trusting the vibes.

📙 Confession #5: I Add Books to My TBR Faster Than I Read Them

Every time I finish a book, I feel like I’ve made progress.

My TBR pile gets slightly smaller.

I feel accomplished.

And then five minutes later I’m scrolling through recommendations, reading reviews, or discovering a new release that sounds too good to ignore… and suddenly the list is even longer than it was before.

It’s a cycle. A beautiful, chaotic cycle.

Your Turn 👀

Now I need to know: what are your chaotic reader confessions?

Let’s be honest with each other.

  • Do you start multiple books at once?
  • Have you ever bought a book purely because the cover was pretty?
  • How out of control is your TBR right now?
  • Do you ever forget character names halfway through a book?

Drop your reader confessions in the comments so we can all feel a little less alone in our bookish chaos.

Because if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this:

Readers might love order in stories… but our reading habits are often gloriously chaotic. 📚
