Welcome to Bookworm Confessional, where I spill my most shameful, silly, or strangely specific reader habits. This week’s confession? I absolutely judge books by their covers—and not just a little.
You know the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? Cute. Noble. Utterly unrealistic. Because the second I see a cover with a minimalist pastel watercolor and swirly cursive font, I instantly know:
This book is not for me.
And if I spot a moody, gothic cover with crows, thorns, or vaguely Victorian silhouettes? Take my money.
I’ve skipped award-winning books simply because the covers looked like textbooks. I’ve bought utterly mediocre reads because the cover had vibes. I’ve been burned. I’ve been blessed. And I still haven’t learned.
I know cover designers aren’t fortune tellers, and a beautiful exterior doesn’t guarantee a good story (looking at you, three-star fantasy with the stunning foil embossing). But when you’re drowning in a TBR that’s one bad mood away from collapse, you gotta make snap decisions somewhere.
And let’s be honest: half the joy of reading is curating your shelves to look like a Pinterest-worthy altar to your taste.
So yes, I’m a cover snob. And proud. (Sort of.)
🕵️‍♀️ Your Turn — Fess Up!
What’s your bookish confession?
- Do you secretly love dog-earing pages?
- Do you skim entire chapters if the vibe is off?
- Have you ever lied about finishing a classic?
Spill the tea in the comments or over on Instagram — because let’s face it, being a reader is a little chaotic, and we might as well own it.
