Let’s be honest—reading time is precious, and not every book is worth the investment. Over the years, I’ve noticed a few red flags that make me side-eye a story… or DNF it altogether. Today, I’m sharing five bookish deal-breakers that almost always have me closing the cover early.
1. Endless Info Dumping in Chapter One
If I need a flowchart, glossary, and three cups of coffee to get through the opening pages, we’re already on rocky ground. Ease me in—don’t drown me in lore before I even know who the main character is!
2. The “Not Like Other Girls” Trope
You know the one. She hates dresses. She reads books. She thinks other women are shallow. This isn’t feminism—it’s lazy writing. Pass.
3. Characters Who Speak in TED Talks
Real people don’t talk in monologues of profound wisdom every five seconds. If every character sounds like a motivational poster, I’m out.
4. Instant Love with Zero Chemistry
If two characters lock eyes across a crowded room and are suddenly soulmates before they’ve even shared a conversation… nope. I need the tension. The banter. The slow burn.
5. Describing Women Like an AI Bot Trying to Be Sexy
If I read one more line like “she breasted boobily down the stairs,” I may scream. Women are not just hair, curves, and mysterious gazes. Write us like people.
