🍲 Literary Comfort Food: The House in the Cerulean Sea + Creamy Baked Mac & Cheese

There’s something magical about curling up with a comfort read on a lazy Sunday—especially if you’ve got a warm, satisfying dish by your side. Today on Literary Gluttony, I’m pairing one of my favorite cozy books with a dish that brings the same kind of soul-soothing comfort. Whether you’re nursing a book hangover or just want a little literary TLC, this combo is sure to warm you from the inside out.

📚 The Book: The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

A gentle, heartwarming tale about found family, compassion, and discovering your own courage. It’s whimsical and sweet without being saccharine—like a hug in book form. If you’re ever feeling weighed down by the world, this book is the equivalent of pulling a fluffy blanket over your head and breathing deep.

🍲 The Food: Creamy Baked Mac & Cheese (With Crispy Topping!)

This isn’t your boxed mac. This is the stuff of childhood memories and grown-up indulgence—rich, creamy, and finished with a golden, buttery crust. It’s the perfect pairing for a book that feels like home.

🧀 Ingredients:

For the pasta:

  • 1 lb elbow macaroni or cavatappi
  • Salt for boiling water

For the cheese sauce:

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk (warm)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (optional, but recommended)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded (or sub mozzarella for milder flavor)
  • Salt, pepper, and a pinch of smoked paprika (to taste)

For the topping:

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • ÂĽ cup Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: pinch of garlic powder or herbs

🥄 Instructions:

  1. Boil the pasta:
Cook your macaroni in well-salted water until just al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Make the roux:
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until it forms a golden paste (this gets rid of the raw flour taste).
  3. Build the sauce:
Slowly pour in the warm milk and cream while whisking constantly. Simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Add the cheese:
Stir in cheddar, Gruyère, and your seasonings. Mix until melted and smooth.
  5. Combine:
Add the drained pasta to the sauce and stir to coat evenly.
  6. Assemble and bake:
Pour everything into a greased baking dish. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, Parmesan, melted butter, and optional garlic/herbs. Sprinkle over the top.
  7. Bake:
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top. Let cool slightly before serving.

🧡 Why This Pairing Works:

  • Warmth & Whimsy: Just like the book, this dish is warm, comforting, and full of quiet delight.
  • Layers of Comfort: The rich cheese sauce and crispy topping echo the emotional depth and heart of Klune’s story.
  • Satisfying Until the Last Bite: Whether it’s the last page or the last forkful, both leave you full in the best possible way.
