The Ballad of Falling Dragons is the second installment in Sarah A. Parker’s epic fantasy trilogy, continuing a story filled with powerful magic, devastating choices, unforgettable characters, and emotional wounds that refuse to heal. As alliances shift and truths come to light, the stakes rise higher than ever, forcing our characters to confront both external threats and the darkness lurking within themselves. With dragons, destiny, heartbreak, and hope woven together beautifully, this sequel delivers an emotional journey that is impossible to forget.

There are some books that entertain you, and then there are books that completely dismantle you before gently handing your broken heart back in pieces. The Ballad of Falling Dragons firmly belongs in the second category.
Sarah A. Parker has a way of writing that feels almost lyrical at times. Every page feels deliberate, every emotion amplified, every character moment given room to breathe. This was a beautiful book from beginning to end, even when it was actively tearing me apart emotionally.
One of the things I continue to love most about this series is the depth of its characters. Nobody feels one-dimensional. Their struggles, fears, hopes, and mistakes feel painfully real despite the fantastical setting. Parker excels at creating characters you become deeply invested in, which makes every triumph feel exhilarating and every heartbreak hit twice as hard.
Emotionally, this book is relentless. There were moments that left me hopeful, moments that left me devastated, and plenty of moments that had me staring at the page trying to process what I had just read. The emotional weight never feels forced, though. It grows naturally from the relationships and choices these characters make throughout the story.
The world-building also continues to expand in exciting ways. New revelations add depth to the lore while raising even more questions about where this story is ultimately headed. Parker balances the larger fantasy elements with the intimate character moments exceptionally well, ensuring that even the biggest plot developments remain grounded in the emotional journeys of the cast.
My only reason for settling on four stars rather than five is that there were a few sections that felt slower than others, particularly as pieces were being moved into place for what is clearly shaping up to be a massive finale. While those moments weren’t enough to diminish my enjoyment, they occasionally affected the pacing.
And then there’s that ending.
I should have known better.
Of course it ends on a cliffhanger. Of course Sarah A. Parker chose emotional devastation as her preferred method of saying goodbye until the next book. The final chapters left me desperate for answers, and now I’m counting down the days until I can get my hands on the final installment of this trilogy.
If you’ve already fallen in love with this series, The Ballad of Falling Dragons absolutely delivers. It’s heartbreaking, beautiful, emotional, and impossible to put down once the story truly takes hold. Just be prepared to finish the final page and immediately start searching for information about the next book.
Devour or Nibble?
Devour. If you’ve invested yourself in this series, there’s no question. This sequel expands the world, deepens the emotional stakes, and delivers the kind of heartbreak that fantasy readers secretly live for.
